5 Tips for Keeping Your Home and Pets Flea-Free

If your pets are left outside in the garden to enjoy themselves and the freedom that comes with this, there is a detrimental effect that must always be kept in mind. Pets can bring fleas in your home, and dealing with these pests can be a difficult task to tackle. Here are some useful tips that will help you keep both your home and your pets flea-free.

Steam your carpets

If there is one particular place in your home where fleas will immediately install and thrive, that would be your carpets, followed closely by any upholstery. When dealing with a flea problem, it is essential to do some deep cleaning, and steam-cleaning your carpets is one of the measures guaranteed to kill and eliminate all the fleas.

Vacuum the entire home at least once a week

The development cycle for fleas is the summer, when the flea season is in full swing, is two weeks, so, if you keep your home clean and you vacuum it correctly at least once a week, you will be able to eliminate fleas in all stages of their development and keep pets flea-free.

Here is an excellent tip that will help you get rid of fleas in the most efficient way possible. Vacuuming helps, but the insects may still thrive in your vacuum cleaner if you are not thorough with cleaning the machine after each time.

Buy an anti-flea collar and put it inside your vacuum cleaner. The agents in the collar will attack and kill the fleas gathered by the vacuum right away. You can also add lemongrass and cedarwood essential oils to the vacuum canister to kill fleas too.

Your pet’s bedding should get machine washed weekly

If your pet spends a lot of time outside, it can be challenging to keep pets flea-free and also keep the fleas out of your home. What you can do is to take measures like the ones described earlier. Also, make sure that your pet’s bedding gets a thorough cleaning, by washing it in your washing machine at high temperatures. Most dog beds are machine washable and hold up quite well to being washed monthly.

If you have a small dog and don’t want to deal with dog hair in your washing machine, buy a cheap dog bed from Walmart (around $6) and then throw it away after a month or two and replace it.

Apply flea treatments to your pet

There are all sorts of flea treatments available, and it is up to you to pick the right one for your pet. You can always consult your vet and ask for a professional opinion. You will find flea shampoos, flea pills, flea collars, and even flea sprays. With so many methods available, it would be a shame not to treat your pet.

It is also the surest way to minimize the flea numbers that can be brought inside by a pet. There are also several essential oils for treating fleas that you can blend together in a spray bottle in order to treat carpets, furniture, dog beds, and even your dog. This will definitely help keep pets flea-free.

Take care of your lawn, too

The flea larvae develop best in the shade, so a good idea is to trim and mow your lawn regularly. The shorter the grass is, the more light from the sun it will allow to penetrate at ground level. This way, you will be able to kill the flea larvae before they turn into adults and nestle in the coat of your pet.
